Formulate: Your New Best Friend For Hair Care

Formulate is a custom shampoo and conditioner company that has you work with a chemist to create your own perfect shampoo and conditioner. Your hair, your goals. Formulate is the world’s first personal formulation chemistry service. I’ve recently had the chance to work with Formulate in order to try their product free of charge in exchange for this review.

Formulate uses ingredients that are based on peer-reviewed scientific studies and are paraben, sulfate, and cruelty free as well as being cold-mixed. Once you join Formulate you can continually work with your chemist over time to alter your formula if your preferences or hair goals change. One thing I really love about Formulate is that I can log into my account at any time and see the formulas for both my shampoo and conditioner.

When you enter Formulate’s website you will be asked to answer some questions about yourself and then you will be matched with a personal chemist. So far I have really been impressed with both my chemist and my technician. Formulate states that they want to help you reach your hair and scalp goals, and has multiple areas from which you can choose those goals. Up to 5 different goals can be chosen. I had several goals in mind, but the ones I ultimately chose were anti-frizz, lengthen, strengthen, color protection (I dye my hair), and glossy. In addition to hair goals you will be able to choose the scent of your products. There are 10 different scents to choose from currently and you can also choose the level of strength of your scent – light, medium or strong!

I have found through using the shampoo and conditioner that I have had to adjust my expectations of use. The shampoo doesn’t lather up as much as store-bought shampoos seem to in my hair on the first wash, but I have to be careful not to use too much in the second washing or it lathers too much. This has shown me just how great it cleans my hair and scalp. I’m not even sure I need the second wash, but old habits die hard, right? The conditioner is very different from any other conditioner I’ve used in the past as well. This conditioner is a melt, and I found that in my trial uses I used way too much. The standard amount of conditioner ended up being far, far too much. Through trial and error and messaging with my technician, I came to realize that the cold-pressed melt that Formulate uses doesn’t require a ton of product, and I now only need a fraction of the conditioner I used in the past.

I’ve been using Formulate for several weeks now, and here is how I’m faring so far. I have tried 2 different scents. First I chose Cool Coconut. I loved the scent but my 4-year-old poured the remainder into the bath for bubbles, so I had to get a new one. Super sad day! I decided that if I was going to go again, I’d try another scent and allowed my technician to surprise me. She chose Serenity, which is a lovely blend of Lavendar and Chamomile. Perhaps she thought I needed something to help me relax after the first debacle! I loved the scent but I had chosen light for both options. I decided to tweak my formula just a little, and when I did I upped the scent factor to Medium. I don’t typically like really strong smells so I started out light. But I liked the scent so much that I stepped it up in hopes that it would remain in my hair more strongly!

Formulate offers their shampoo and conditioner sets in three sizes. You can order them in a 4oz., 8 oz. or 14 oz. size. I started with an 8 oz. set because I wanted enough to use it for awhile for my review, but not so much that if I decided to change my formula I would feel wasteful not using the rest. And while I did change my formula, I will use the rest of what I have before I start with the new set. I’m happy with it so far and don’t want to be wasteful.

So far the pros of using Formulate are that my hair definitely looks fuller. For reference, I have fine hair that is about 4-5 inches below my shoulders. It is wavy and frizzy naturally. Fullness wasn’t even one of my hair goals, and yet, here I am! Even my husband, who isn’t bad but doesn’t always notice when I’ve made a change, commented on my hair and said it looked like it had more body. It’s definitely shinier than it has been in the past as well. But I think my favorite thing about this experience has been that it really seems to clean my hair and scalp better than anything I’ve ever used. In the past I got one good hair day, and that was the day I washed it. On day two I would need dry shampoo, and even then it wouldn’t be any good down and I’d need to pull it up. But now I get two awesome hair days without the oil I used to struggle with, and even on day three I don’t always need dry shampoo and I can pull it back without it appearing greasy! This is an absolute first for me.

In all I would give Formulate a 10/10 as far as product quality, customer service and value. While Formulate costs a little more than I might have paid in the past for my products, the quality far outweighs them. Not only that, but I use far less product than I needed in the past – especially for conditioner. And it’s also saved me from continuously trying new things in order to find the right thing. I’ve been washing my hair for 43 years and it took me until now to find something I really love.

Why FabFitFun Is The Best Subscription Box Out There

FabFitFun is a quarterly subscription box service. They deliver a box to your home once every 3 months, for Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. The also have Editor Boxes. These boxes are available if you join in between the seasonal boxes. The are comprised of the favorite items of, you guessed it, the Editors. Members are able to purchase these boxes in addition to the seasonal boxes if they wish. However, you aren’t required to.

Fabfitfun has a wide range of items in their boxes. You can get jewelry, wraps, scarves, socks, makeup, haircare, skincare, tech items, fitness items, and so much more. Every box I’ve received has been worth over $300. (Each box costs $49). Some of the items are a surprise, but some you are able to choose. If you are a select annual member (meaning you pay for the year upfront) you will get to choose more of what is in your box. You also get priority shipping. Contrary to what people think, this is NOT more expensive than paying quarterly. As a matter of fact, it’s a little cheaper as when my bill comes it’s $180, which means that each of my boxes are $45.

FabFitFun also has an Add-On sale at the beginning of each season, where they offer products at up to 70% off of their retail value. They also have Edit Sales, in conjunction with the release of the Editor Boxes, that do the same thing. Again, you aren’t required to purchase anything at the sales, they are just available to you if you want to shop them.

I love FabFitFun’s boxes, of course, and I’ve found so many of my new favorite products this way. However, there’s a lot more to it than just the boxes. FFF has a community page on their website where members can go to talk. It’s called the Community Forum. They talk about FFF, of course, but they also use the community to find support, talk about problems, trade items, and make friends. The discussions are so wonderful, and it makes me so happy to see strangers coming together the way they do in the community. There’s even a group who does a Christmas in July gift exchange. There’s so much to be found there, and it’s completely free when you join FabFitFun. I’m also currently in a Book Club and a Cooking Club through the Forum!

In addition, FabFitFun has a TON of workout videos available to its members, again, completely free with your membership. They also send out newsletters with helpful tips, healthy recipes, and fun information. They have other videos as well for cooking and a range of informative things!

I actually love FabFitFun so much that I became an affiliate. We say #fabfitfunpartner. Which just means that I have a link to use to sign up (and I do earn a small commission on sales). I’ll post it below if you are interested in joining. I’ve taken several pictures of the actual boxes I’ve received as well, so I’ll post those here too. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, as I’m happy to help!

FabFitFun is more than a subscription box service to me. It’s inspired me to live a more happy and healthy life. It’s motivated me to connect with people all over North America, and it’s helped me find some incredible products that I’d probably never have found otherwise.

My Fall 2019 FabFitFun box!

The Grove Collaborative

For years now I’ve seen these brands on store shelves and didn’t get why someone would pay for cleaning supplies what they were marked. I was using my usual cleaning supplies. The stuff I’d just always used, either because it was what I had become accustomed to, or because it was the most affordable at the time.

Then I saw an article on The Grove Collaborative and, wanting to know more, I checked out the website. I was honestly moved. Their dedication to the environment is something that inspired me. And the prices on their site were far cheaper than what I was seeing in the store. I had an offer for a free set of supplies, so I decided to give it a try and placed my first order. (If you want to see it before reading the rest of this, here is my referral link. If you use it you will get the 5 free items that I also received when I placed my first order, and I will receive a discount. Please note, however, that all opinions are my own, and I have paid for all of the items I have ordered from them at full price, with no sponsorship from TGC. This review, like all of my reviews, is 100% my honest opinion.)

Get your 5-piece set for FREE here:

Some of these items have become my new ride-or-dies, and some of them I will pass on. I’ll tell you why below. But to start, here is a picture of my first order, including the items I received for free:

gc2

Whomever had packaged my order hand-wrote a little message on the order slip inside the box. It said, “Megan, you’re beautiful. Never let anyone tell you differently.” I was surprised that they were allowed to do things like that. It was lovely. Not all of my shipments have contained a little note like that. My last one did, it said, “Thank You” – you can see it in my video at the end of this blog.

Anyway, I went on to try the items and, as I stated, love some, didn’t love others. Before I break it down, let me explain TGC to you. They are a company very focused on lowering their carbon footprint, and helping us to lower ours as well. Here’s the exact wording on their website:

“Doing no harm

As a Certified B Corporation, we are recognized as a business doing good for people, animals, communities, and the planet.

Treating the planet with care

We offer products that are gentler on the earth, prioritize post-consumer materials for packaging, and carbon offset every shipment that goes out our door.

Planting tomorrow’s forest

A portion of every Grove shipment goes to the Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees across the United States. We’re aiming to plant one million new trees over the next three years.” – The Grove Collaborative Website

So how does it work? Technically, you become a member of TGC. That worried me at first, but it’s actually really flexible. To be a VIP it costs $20 per year. That’s it. You can order what you want, when you want. Right now I have mine set up to send me things every 2 months. They put suggestions in my cart and I just go in and take out what I don’t want and add in what I do. You get free shipping on your orders with your membership as well. They also send you free stuff with your orders. In my last order they sent me a full-sized GC hand lotion. In the one before that, they sent me a great lip balm. In addition, if you order a certain amount in your order, they will send a free gift (which you can opt out of if you don’t want it – but why? IT’S FREE! LOL)

All of that is fun and great but it’s not why I switched. Ultimately, I switched because I have 3 children aged 5, 3 and 1 – and I am scared to have toxic, caustic chemicals in the house. I like this site because they make these healthier products more affordable, and I don’t have to be scared if my kids grab the window cleaner when I turn around to answer the phone. It’s plant-based and non-toxic – and a relief. Obviously you don’t want to spray it in your eyes or drink it, but it is so much safer than the stuff I’ve been using up until now. So here’s a breakdown of my first order and what I thought of each product. You can also watch my video at the end to see the order I received the other day. And again, if you want to try it and get the 5-piece set for free, here’s my referral link:

20181016_161634

The GC Cleaning Caddy. This came free and it’s adorable. It’s metal and can be used to store and/or carry your cleaning supplies. But it can also be used as a decoration. Which is probably what I’ll end up doing with it because it’s freaking adorable.

The first item here is the Meyer’s multi-surface cleaner. It comes in a ridiculous number of scents. It’s literally like 10 or more. So far I’ve purchased the Pumpkin (smells more like those candles that are supposed to smell like baking sweets – not bad, but not my jam), Basil (my favorite so far) and Iowa Pine, which I just got and haven’t smelled yet. I love this for spraying and wiping down my counters, kitchen table and chairs. I’m obsessed.

TGC Floursack Towels – These are awesome. Watch my video to see the size.

Method Glass and Surface – I have only used on glass. I bought the Mint scent and OMG I LOVE IT. It literally leaves ZERO streaks. Until now I used Windex and it was decent but I often still had some streaking or foggy areas. The Method leaves my glass so clear and is my new go-to!

Meyer’s Dish Soap – This one I won’t be reordering. I like it well enough, but it’s more expensive than Dawn, which is my old go-to, and it uses essential oils for scent. That’s nice if you like the smell, but I don’t. So this one’s a pass for me.

Method Daily Shower Spray – LOVE this. I have the Eucalyptus Mint scent but it smells like pine to me. Which I love, so that’s the scent I keep ordering lol Just a quick spray down. It says no need to rinse, but I give my shower a quick rinse anyway.

16 oz. Spray Bottle – it’s glass and it’s pretty. I haven’t actually used it yet.

Cleaning Gloves – I love these so much I’ve ordered a second pair. They are perfect for doing dishes. They are soft on the inside and don’t leave my hands smelling bad after I use them.

Meyer’s Hand Soap – (Not Shown) I don’t love this soap. It’s OK, but if I’m going to pay that much for hand soap, I’m going to TJ Maxx and getting some Pecksniff’s hand soap (my fave!)

Walnut Scrubber Sponges (set of 2) – These are good sponges, they do the job and the best part about them is they are pretty, so I don’t mind leaving them out. However, the price is just too high for me. I’ll stick with my Scotch Brites for now.

GC Hand Sanitizer Spray – LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!! I have it in the Blood Orange, which is one of my favorite flavors, as well as smells. I’ve reordered this little guy as well.

GC Towels – Okay. These are basically my favorite thing in the kitchen. I literally have 5 of them and just put 3 more in my cart today. They are the BEST freaking towels. They are thick and absorbent and I am going to replace all of my kitchen towels with them eventually. Seriously.

Method Squirt and Mop Hard Floor Cleaner – I’ve used this on our hardwood laminate flooring with great success (ours is Pergo Outlast +) without issue. It smells amazing – I have it in the Lemon Ginger (there are 2 other scents) and I also have the Wood Floor cleaner in Almond. Not sure what the difference is between the two. Both smell good. These are the perfect little thing if you want to spot mop. However, if I’m getting down and scrubbing all of my floors (uh, not that I do that often) I wouldn’t use this. I’d dilute something else in a bucket of water. But for a small room like a bathroom or spot mopping, this is perfect.

The Grove Collaborative gives you a free trial VIP membership and they were super clear about it ending for me. I decided to re-up and pay the $20 because I did end up liking it so much. Along with cleaning supplies, they have allllll sorts of other things for pets, home, babies, personal care, etc. So feel free to check it out and, should you decide to order, use this link and get a present for yourself – and for me!

Living With Dishidrotic Eczema

Years ago I awoke one morning to find tiny, clear, itchy blisters on a few of my fingers. Thinking it was poison ivy, I scratched them open, poured rubbing alcohol on it, and moved on with my life. (I was in my 20’s, what can I say?) Time went on and it happened again. This time I was pretty sure I hadn’t been in the woods or anywhere poison ivy would be, but I handled it the same way. The third time, it was in the dead of winter. I knew for a fact it couldn’t be poison ivy. And when I thought about it, I have never had poison ivy in my entire life.

Years went by and I would occasionally have these little outbreaks of the blisters on my fingers. They were typically in-between my fingers. I searched online for an answer but found nothing. Eventually, I discovered an article on Dishidrotic Eczema. And I finally knew what was wrong with me. Here are signs of it, as listed on the website of the National Eczema Association:

Symptoms of dyshidrotic eczema include:

  • Deep-set blisters on the edges of the fingers, toes, palms and soles of the feet
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Flaking
  • Scaly, cracked skin
  • Pain

This particular form of eczema appears a tiny blisters which are extremely itchy. If you scratch them to relieve the itch, however, they not only get even itchier, but they spread. Super awesome, right? The skin can also thicken over time from all of the irritation, which – you guessed it – just makes the problem worse.

I eventually went to my doctor and he confirmed that it was, indeed, Dishidrotic Eczema. And so, finally having named the beast, I worked to find an answer. It has no cure, and it’s also not contagious, so don’t worry about spreading it to others. But since there is no cure, that means you have to just work to maintain it and keep it at bay. Several things can cause an outbreak. For me, stress is the biggest cause. Another is heat. The third biggest cause for me is water. A lot of handwashing will cause an outbreak. Just another hilarious joke on me from the universe since I also have OCD and – yes, you guessed it, wash my hands a lot. Let me list some things that can cause outbreaks for you here, which I also snagged from the website of the National Eczema Association. You can read more on there website here: https://nationaleczema.org/eczema/types-of-eczema/dyshidrotic-eczema/

Common triggers for dyshidrotic eczema:

  • Stress
  • Pollen
  • Moist hands and feet from excessive sweating or prolonged contact with water
  • Nickel in everyday objects such as jewelry, keys, cell phones, eyeglass frames, stainless steel items, and metal buttons, snaps and zippers
  • Nickel in foods such as cocoa, chocolate, soy beans, oatmeal, nuts, almonds, fresh and dried legumes, and canned foods
  • Cobalt in everyday objects such as cobalt-blue colored dishware, paints and varnishes; certain medical equipment; jewelry; and in metal snaps, buttons and zippers
  • Cobalt in foods such as clams, fish, leafy green vegetables, liver, milk, nuts, oysters, and red meat
  • Chromium salts used in the manufacturing of cement, mortar, leather, paints and anticorrosives

So how do I live with it every day? Some days it’s just not there. These are days when my outbreak triggers are at bay. When they aren’t? Things can get bad really quickly for me, especially in times of high stress. I’ve had a couple of outbreaks that spread all over my hands and up my arms, almost to my elbows. The upside? If I’m not managing my stressors, my eczema lets me know it immediately. So I’m just taking that as a signal my body is sending me to get things back on track.

The best way to manage it is to avoid your triggers once you know what they are. But we don’t live in a perfect world, so outbreaks will happen. Here are the products I use to deal with it. (All of the links below contain my Amazon affiliate link).

GREEN GOO                                                                                                                                             Find it here:  https://amzn.to/2zdoaCc

Green Goo is a salve that I use for anything from mosquito bites (I’m allergic, so when they bite me I get these massive, itchy welts on my skin), to sunburn. It also helps with my eczema. When I feel itchy between my fingers and I know something is starting to flare up, I grab this and put it on the area to stop the itching.

ALOE VERA GEL                                                                                                                                    Find it here:  https://amzn.to/2MUKIJS

Aloe Vera is incredibly soothing for the skin. This one is the one I use, but I’d imagine any would do the trick. It’s great for soothing irritation and it can help with the itching as well.

FIRST AID BEAUTY ULTRA REPAIR CREAM                                                                                   Find it here: https://amzn.to/2tVRF6n

Another hilarious aspect to this whole thing is that they recommend using creams and lotion to keep this eczema at bay. But for me, most creams and lotions actually aggravate the condition. This is the one cream I’ve found that doesn’t. I actually used it for awhile before reading it and seeing that it states right on it that it helps with eczema.

CLOBETASOL PROPIONATE CREAM

This cream is prescription strength and it’s a corticosteroid. Mine is prescribed by my doctor. I save this for the times when an outbreak is simply out of my control. It handles it quickly and gets things back in check. I use it very sparingly, as a little bit goes a long way. But I try to avoid using it a lot and use the first three things I listed more often.

Hopefully this has helped you. I wish I’d stumbled upon a blog like this years ago when I was wondering what in the hell was wrong with me. Have you found other ways of dealing with your dishidrotic eczema? If so, comment below!

Getting Your Dog From A Breeder Isn’t A Bad Thing – It Can Actually Help Rescues More Than Adopting A Stray

Adopt Don’t Shop is a little saying that has been pounded into the heads of everyone I know. People don’t want to encourage puppy mills, and they want homes for abandoned dogs all across the country. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But discouraging people from going to breeders is actually contributing to the problem in a couple of ways.

Now, before you light your torches and come after me, know this. I have personally rescued many animals in my lifetime from the Humane Society, the local dog pound, the side of the road, and strays. As a matter of fact, I’ve adopted 7 cats and given them a loving home until they passed. 2 are still with me today. I’ve also adopted 5 dogs. One of them is still with me, the others have passed. So don’t think I’m against adopting. But there are issues here that people need to know about, because, like with everything in life, there is always more to the story. Here are two huge reasons some people shouldn’t rescue.

First, many families want puppies. If you go to a responsible breeder, you know EXACTLY what kind of  a dog you are getting. This easily solves the problem of all of the dogs being dumped at the Humane Society and pound because the dog – got bigger/had more energy/didn’t fit some other imagined ideal – than the owner was expecting.

Second, Adopt Don’t Shop has created the most insane business venture you can imagine. “Rescue” dogs are actually being shipped into the country. And it’s big business. And you should be incredibly concerned. Many of the dogs coming in are bringing disease with them. See more in this article from NPR:

Or this more recent article from The Washington Post:

And there’s also no shame in wanting, in loving, a specific breed of dog. My rescues have all been incredible mutts and I wouldn’t have them any other way. But that doesn’t mean that bred dogs aren’t amazing as well. All animals are incredible. And society shaming breeders and the people who want bred dogs is just ridiculous. It’s time that it stops.

Puppy Mills are obviously a serious issue. But all breeders are certainly not puppy mills. It’s your responsibility to find a reputable, reliable, responsible breeder. And they absolutely exist. I happen to know one. And that’s where I just got my dog.

A few years ago my husband and I went to dinner at a local restaurant and ended up being seated at the bar because it was too crowded. We were sat beside a couple who we immediately began talking to. They bred German Shepherds. One of my all-time favorite dog breeds. Talking to them was amazing. This woman, named Jean, flew dogs in from all over the world. Russia, Germany, etc. These dogs placed first place in competitions worldwide. They were the best of the best. Her passion, love and excitement were incredible to see. When I told her I’d always rescued and spoke of our current dogs, Bruno and Brautigan, she stopped me. She said, “Brautigan?” (Lots of people need me to repeat his name because they’ve never heard it.) So I said yes, that he was named after an author. She said, “Yeah, Richard Brautigan. My first dog’s name was Brautigan.” Let me tell you, I about fell off my chair. NO ONE knows who Richard Brautigan is, let alone names their dog after him. It was kizmit. We connected on Facebook so that I could see pictures of her Shepherds and so that, maybe someday, I could get one.

A couple of years went by and then, as you know, last October we had to put my beloved to sleep. His name was Bruno. He was actually rescued by a couple who would go to pounds, pull dogs off the kill list, fully vet and test them, and then find them homes. He was the world’s biggest baby and the love of my life. You can look a few blogs back to read all about him. Putting him down was so hard on me, and I really had a tough time getting over it. I still miss him, I think I always will.

But a few months ago my husband and I started to consider getting another dog. I contacted Jean and we discussed options. We didn’t think we wanted a puppy because I wasn’t ready to deal with a puppy as well as 3 kids under 5. So I went out to Jean’s house to meet some dogs. She introduced me to a couple of dogs, and then I met Queenie.

Jean opened the door and Queenie ran over to me, jumped up, and then snuggled me. It was love at first sight. A couple of months went by and we decided to get her. Queenie will be 5 next week, so she still has energy to play with the kids, but she is out of that destructive puppy faze. We introduced her to Brautigan. The first time didn’t go so well (I love Brautigan, but he’s kind of an asshole.) So I studied how to introduce a new dog, followed the steps, and the second time was the charm! They’ve been perfect!

Queenie is definitely my dog. She is always at my side. She is so loving and sweet and gentle, you would think she was raised with my children. When children walk into the room, she excitedly greets them with a gentle kiss. Their loud antics and wildness don’t bother her. She isn’t fazed by our cats. She behaves as though she was trained by me. When I take her out with me, like to PetSmart, she walks right beside me, and when I stop to look at something, she sits by me. When we walk, she is gentle on her lead. She is the perfect dog. And until she was here, I don’t think I realized just how much I was missing my Bruno. Queenie has filled a place in my heart and has made me feel complete and happy and content. She is an incredible specimen to behold. She is beautiful, elegant, and perfect. She is obviously bred from the best in the world. Her name suits her perfectly. She is, indeed, a Queen. But breeding aside, I have found my new best friend. And while I would have gone to the mat in the past to state that rescue dogs were the best dogs, what I’ve learned is that bred dogs are also the best dogs. And whether you get one from the shelter or a breeder, you can count on having a best friend for life.

The Mila Vincent Brush Cleaner REVIEW!

Hey guys! I’ve been looking at brush cleaners for awhile now. I’ve tried using wipes and sprays, but they just don’t get my brushes completely clean. So I ended up deciding on this one. It was on Amazon for only $19.99, which was the cheapest I’ve seen one of these. I was a little afraid that it might not work well, but I didn’t want to pay a fortune. I’ll post pictures and a video of us using it so you can see it in action! If you want to get your own, here’s the link! (This is not a paid promotion, I paid for this item myself. The link below is my affiliate link.)

Some tips I have are that if the device doesn’t seem to be spinning evenly or quickly, try pulling the brush out of the silicone cover just a little bit. If the brush is too close to the top, sometimes it seems to throw it off. In addition, some of my brushes were so dirty that I had to clean them a couple of times.

In all, I give this a 10/10! It did an awesome job cleaning all of my brushes. It was super easy to use and the silicone pieces fit all of my varied brush sizes. Some of them I had to force in, but the silicone stretched to accommodate all the sizes easily.

I used hot water and Dawn dishsoap (the green antibacterial version).
